Brother's New Gaming + Editing PC, Build Spec, 2026-05-20¶
URL: https://mkdocs.justinsforge.com/memory/handoffs/brother-pc-build-spec-2026-05-20/
Locked constraints¶
- Budget: ~$2500 tower only
- Platform: AMD AM5 (DDR5 mandatory, long socket life through 2027+)
- GPU brand: NVIDIA (NVENC + CUDA for Premiere)
- Workload: 4K gaming + Premiere Pro editing
- Assumed: 4K 120Hz monitor target, all-new parts
Recommended build (~$2500)¶
| Part | Pick | ~$ | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D | $479 | Best gaming CPU on market; 3D V-cache also boosts Premiere timeline scrubbing. 8C/16T handles editing fine. |
| GPU | NVIDIA RTX 5080 16GB | $999 | 4K 120Hz capable in modern titles; 16GB VRAM clears Premiere 4K timelines + AI tools; NVENC 9th-gen for fast exports. |
| Motherboard | ASUS ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi | $290 | B850 = current-gen AM5, PCIe 5.0 x16 + M.2, WiFi 7, 2.5GbE, strong VRM for 9800X3D. X870 is overkill unless he needs USB4. |
| RAM | G.Skill Flare X5 64GB (2x32GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 | $210 | 6000 CL30 = AM5 sweet spot (1:1 Infinity Fabric). 64GB is the editing floor in 2026. |
| NVMe primary | Samsung 990 Pro 2TB (PCIe 4.0) | $170 | OS + apps + active projects. PCIe 4.0 — PCIe 5.0 doesn't help editing real-world and runs hot. |
| NVMe scratch | WD Black SN850X 2TB | $150 | Premiere media cache + scratch + game library. Keeps active project IO off OS drive. |
| PSU | Corsair RM850x (2024, ATX 3.1, 80+ Gold) | $145 | 850W = headroom for 5080 (360W) + 9800X3D + transients. ATX 3.1 native 12V-2x6 connector. |
| Case | Fractal North XL or Lian Li Lancool 216 | $170 | North XL = quiet airflow + clean aesthetic; Lancool 216 = max airflow/$. Both fit 360 AIO + 5080. |
| Cooling | Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 | $90 | 9800X3D runs cool, but 360 AIO keeps it silent under Premiere export loads. Best price/perf AIO. |
| Total | ~$2503 |
Tier alternates (if budget shifts)¶
Mid (~$1700-1800) — drop to: - CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D ($320) — last-gen X3D, near-identical gaming - GPU: RTX 5070 Ti 16GB ($749) — 1440p high-refresh / 4K 60Hz - RAM: 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 ($110) - NVMe: single 2TB 990 Pro, skip scratch
Ultra (~$3500-4000) — bump to: - GPU: RTX 5090 32GB ($1999) — 4K 240Hz + future-proof Resolve/AI - RAM: 96GB DDR5-6000 (2x48GB) — multicam 4K headroom - NVMe scratch: 4TB SN850X
Buying notes¶
- 9800X3D stock is tight; Microcenter in-store typically has best price + bundle.
- Avoid PCIe 5.0 NVMe at this tier — thermal throttling + no real workload gain.
- B850 board is intentional; X870/X870E only matter for USB4 + extra PCIe 5.0 lanes neither workload uses.
- 850W PSU is sized for 5080. Bump to 1000W only if upgrading to 5090.
- Confirm case + 360 AIO clearance before ordering (North XL fits; smaller cases may not).
Next steps¶
- Confirm monitor refresh rate (changes GPU tier).
- Confirm no parts being reused (PSU/case/storage swap changes total).
- Once locked, generate PCPartPicker URL for one-click cart.
